METHOCEL™ A4M Food Grade

2

METHOCEL™ A4M Food Grade is a medium–molecular weight methylcellulose thickener. It yields a viscosity of 4,000 cPs at 2% in water.

Product Overview

METHOCEL™ A4M Food Grade is a water-soluble cellulose ether based on nonionic methylcellulose (MC). This grade is commonly used as a binder or thickener for food-contacting applications. It provides a viscosity of 4,000 cPs when added to water at 2% and is a perfect fit for ink and coating applications.

Applications

METHOCEL™ A4M Food Grade functions as a binder, rheology modifier, thickener, lubricant, film former, and suspension aid. The product is widely used in ink and coating applications for food packaging but can also be used in cleaning solutions, plastics, and extruded ceramics.
  • Coatings and Inks: METHOCEL™ A4M serves as a thickener and rheology modifier in coatings and inks. It offers protective colloid and pigment suspension properties, enhancing film formation for greater strength and improved finish durability.
  • Ceramics: In ceramics extrusion and casting, METHOCEL™ A4M ensures uniform thickening, better binding, and excellent rheology control. It also provides lubricity and smoother surfaces and prevents sagging or deformation in various ceramic applications.
  • Cleaning Solutions: METHOCEL™ A4M is utilized in cleaners and detergents to improve thickening, control viscosity, prevent soil redeposition, and stabilize emulsions.
  • Plastics: As a suspension agent in PVC polymerization, METHOCEL™ A4M offers exceptional particle size control, low reactor scaling, and high bulk densities. It also enhances plasticizer absorption.
