METHOCEL™ K4M is a medium-weight hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) thickener. At 2% in water, it yields a viscosity of 4,000 cPs and is often used in adhesive, coating, and ceramic applications.

Product Overview

METHOCEL™ K4M is a naturally derived, nontoxic cellulose thickener supplied in powder form. This cellulose ether contains moderate hydroxypropyl substitution on the cellulose polymer backbone. Solutions containing METHOCEL™ K4M are thixotropic and easy to spread and provide good lubricity. Additionally, METHOCEL™ K4M is an excellent rheology modifier needed for a variety of formulations since it is pH stable in both acidic and alkaline environments. 

METHOCEL™ K4M can address problems such as defects in ceramic applications caused by poor green strength. It also helps prevent fluctuations in viscosity due to temperature or ingredient precipitation. It can improve the workability of formulations by preventing sagging or dripping of paints and coatings on vertical and overhead surfaces. 

Applications

METHOCEL™ K4M functions as a thickening agent in coatings and adhesives and as a binder in ceramics to improve green strength. Additionally, it can function as a thickener, rheology modifier, lubricant, film former, and water retention aid across multiple industries. 

Ceramics: At 90°C, solutions containing METHOCEL™ K4M will reversibly gel, helping provide increased green strength of ceramic compacts prior to firing, reducing defects. METHOCEL™ K4M is thus commonly used in refractories and extrusion processes of technical ceramics and tape-casted ceramics. 

Cleaning Solutions: METHOCEL™ K4M is commonly used in both household and industrial cleaners. This cellulose polymer is soluble in some organic solvents and withstands a wide range of pH. It provides the high-efficiency thickening and rheology control necessary for detergents and cleaning formulations. 

  • Coatings and Inks: METHOCEL™ K4M provides excellent thickening and film properties to a wide range of coating and ink applications. It improves the workability and stability of coatings and inks. 
  • Plastics: METHOCEL™ K4M can act as a suspension agent in PVC polymerization. This HPMC helps provide particle size control, low reactor scaling, high bulk densities, and good plasticizer absorption.
